Title: The Pope and his Sinning Ways
Post by stillsunday on Mar 13th, 2008, 1:15pm
The Vatican came out with a more deadly sins.  Polluting the environment I agree, is bad, but if it is a deadly sin, then aren't we all going to hell? Why not replace, birth control & stem cell research with deceit, human & animal rights violations. They need to go back to the drawing board.

1. "Bioethical" violations such as birth control
2. "Morally dubious" experiments such as stem cell research
3. Drug abuse
4. Polluting the environment
5. Contributing to widening divide between rich and poor
6. Excessive wealth
7. Creating poverty

Shouldn't they be busy praying or something? Jesus.

Because my wife is a Catholic (I am closer to a Pagan than anything else) I pay a bit of attention to these sorts of things.  First, I don't think these are 'major' sins, but are 'minor' sins that can be absolved with simple confession.  Second, I believe these are recommendations as yet, not requirements.  I do agree that they ought to find something more productive to do, like feeding the poor with some of the billions they have from 2k years of offerings, but after all, it is their job to speak on these subjects.  It is not, after all, difficult to find another Christian faith if the Catholic version is too restrictive.

My family is Catholic. Tell a devout Catholic to find a new church, see where it gets you.

I hate to say anything about the Catholic Church, because I am going to offend a lot of people I know! One of the things I find to be so problematic with Catholicism is that there is no flexibility. Of course, when it comes to holy stuff, I guess there has to be only one truly holy water stain on the overpass in the shape of Saint Bernard etc. Pope says so, then it is so. There is no questioning the Pope. No democratic system whatsoever.

Beyond that, there is a long list of what I think is wrong with the Catholic Church. It amazes me that millions of otherwise intelligent people are willing to accept the fact that some old fart in a weird hat (Pope) can tell them exactly what God says. Direct. Beyond question or opposition. There is no other way. Pope way or the highway. Don't think! Let the Church think for you. Your mind is made up for you.

As a show of respect for the Catholic Church, I will have to say that there is NO organized religion which I agree with, for whatever that's worth.

Also: Catholics pay taxes for public education without taking advantage of the public schools. I have to admire the Christian spirit in that. And I'm serious about that. We're talking about a lot of money. Nothing to sneeze at.

We got to live and let live.
I got to be less flippant and show respect for religious people of all varieties.
Live and let live.
